Designed by you? The Endless Configurator.
So here’s a question that nobody asks: ‘Why doesn't the 911 have more models?’ I often spend time in the 911 configurator, confronted with the same paradox of choice. One can just as easily spec a $170k Carrera S as a stripped-out Turbo. The options list on each individual model is a seemingly endless sort of body customizations, leather types, paint samples, metallic or carbon surfaces, stereos, seats - it goes on and on. The pricey aerokit is my personal favorite - I love a 911 to look a bit juvenile and ridiculous, even though the occasional critic will wrongly accuse it of trying to be a ‘GT Car’. I’ll be the first to declare, I'm happy to make one six-figure car look like another six-figure car.
This brings me to the next point, the price/value ratio in the 911 world has a tremendous amount of elasticity. What one customer deems valuable may be totally devoid of value to another. This is the magic of 911, the car can represent the specific passions and interests of the owner, tailored to their every whim, unlike the traditional hierarchy of price that one would typically see with a manufacturer ‘slotting in’ models as they see fit.
So this begs the question as to why the ‘T” designation on my 991.2 even needed to exist. The formula for speccing a Porsche is pretty clear, why not just lift the restrictions on the configurator and let customers have a go at any and all permutations of 911 that they can dream up? A base model with GT carbon seats, lightweight glass, RS rear steering, and sportdesign? Sign me up! Some say the T is a parts bin car, but I argue that it's actually at the essence of what the modern 911 is meant to be. Full of purpose, light on fat. I certainly know that I love mine - just let me configure more of them.
